Introduction

This year’s Cornell Alumni Leadership Conference (CALC) was held in Baltimore, MD at the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel on February 3-4, 2017.

The minutes of the January 17, 2015 CALC meeting were summarized and accepted. No meeting was held in 2016 because of a snow storm in Philadelphia that cancelled the entire CALC.

Treasurer’s Report (Linda Meltzer, for Barbara Brim)

The class account balance as of 12/31/16 is $63,811.62.

Membership (Linda Meltzer)

Linda presented the membership report. Membership has declined a bit from last year, due to CU’s switch from paper to targeted email messages. Linda encouraged everyone to sign up for automatic renewal when they pay their dues. Cornell Alumni Magazine is experiencing a loss of print subscribers. We were reminded that Class Notes are now available only in the print edition. This move should increase the number print subscriptions.

Class Gift (Bruce Wagner)

A discussion ensued regarding the possibility of presenting a class gift to Cornell before the next reunion (June, 2019). A recommended amount was $15,000 for some particular project. Based on ideas from Brenda Teeter of the Cornell Annual Fund staff, we considered a donation to upgrade an area of one of the following facilities:

1. A new campus welcome center, which is going to replace Noyes Lodge.
2. Music Room in the Straight.
3. Robert Purcell Commons
4. Refurbish a research space in Olin Library.

No decision was reached. Brenda will provide more specifics. Bruce will convene a conference call of the Class Executive Committee to finalize our decision. Our goal is to have the work complete – with a plaque – by our next reunion.

JFK Memorial Award (Judie Gorra, for Cindy Wolloch)
The Class Executive Committee held a phone conference and agreed to increase the award to $15,000 from the current $12,000. The fund payout has been over $18,000 for the past two years.

The JFK Award committee agreed to ask another recipient to join the list of readers. Carolyn Neuman reported that Mike Newman does a terrific job of presenting the award and describing the legacy that was JFK’s.

Cornell Annual Fund (Adadot Hayes)

Adadot reported on the Annual fund. The next Giving Day is 3/14/17, and the theme is Pi (got it?). She will look into what other classes have done that has been successful. It was stressed that participation rates are very important so everyone is encouraged to give something on Giving Day.

Frozen Apple Hockey (Susie Holden)
Susie reported on the Thanksgiving hockey game at Madison Square Garden. In addition to the game a dinner was arranged. 27 people attended. Susie was thanked for making the arrangements.

Facebook (Nancy Butler)

Nancy reported on the use of Facebook to keep classmates involved and informed. There are now 72 class members.

Class Newsletter (Bruce Wagner)

Phyllis Goldman had stepped down as editor so that position is open. Elliot Gordon continues to design the newsletter. Linda, Elliot and Bruce will get the 2017 newsletter out in March as part of a dues mailing.

Alumni Magazine/Class Notes (Bruce Wagner)
Bev Lamont who has been writing the class notes for 35+ years is in need of news. During a phone conference, the executive committee discussed giving her a gift for her amazing service. She was given a gift card to the Cornell Store and it was reported that she was very happy with the gift.

55th Reunion - 2019 (Linda Meltzer, for Carolyn Whitman)

Carolyn is looking for volunteers. At this point she especially needs someone to chair and run a planned memorial service. There are many other opportunities for volunteers. Contact Carolyn at csw54@comcast.net to volunteer. Bruce reported that Carolyn, Linda and he will be attending the reunion this year with the Class of ’62’s 55th.

Class Event at CAU (Bruce Wagner)

A class event between reunions was discussed in the past, without success. We decided that a one-week summer get-together on campus at a Cornell Adult University (CAU) session might work well. After much discussion, it was decided that the 4th CAU week of this coming summer (7/30/17-8/5/17) might draw the most classmates. Classmates are encouraged to sign up for that session. Bruce will email the class soon, and CAU is offering us a 10% discount for first-timers.

The meeting was adjourned to the CALC Farewell reception at the hotel.

Respectfully submitted,

Judie Gorra
Secretary
